What is a microphone?

What is a microphone?

What is Microphone – Microphone is an input device for the computer which converts sound into digital form.  With the help of a microphone, you can input audio and also type on the computer.  Many people also know it by the name of Mike.

The sound card is used to connect the microphone to the computer.  Microphones are commonly used for public speaking, live performances, weddings, and ceremonies.

types of microphones :

There are different types of microphones:-

  • Condenser Microphone
  • Kinetic Microphone
  • Ribbon Microphone
  • Carbon Microphone
  • Piezoelectric Microphone
  • Fiber Optic Microphone
  • Laser Microphone
  • Liquid Microphone

All types of microphones have been discussed in 3 parts:-

1. Dynamic Microphone :

Dynamic microphones, also known as moving coil microphones, see widespread use due to their versatile features.  Consisting of a magnet, diaphragm and coil, it operates through a connection between the diaphragm and the coil, using a permanent magnet.  The diaphragm acts as a non-magnetic material.

As sound waves hit the diaphragm, it vibrates, producing vibrations that move the coil within the magnetic field.  As a result, the vibrations of the coil generate an electric current, which converts the sound waves into electronic signals.  This microphone type excels at handling high sound levels effectively.

Remarkably, these microphones do not require external power;  They are cost effective and durable.  You’ve probably seen these microphones during live performances.

2.Condenser Microphone :

Condenser microphones, also known as capacitor microphones, are incredibly sensitive audio devices that are primarily used for tasks such as sound recording.  These are widely used in studios, especially among singers wanting high quality output.  These microphones require battery power to operate.

Consisting of a front plate and a rear plate parallel to each other, they contain a diaphragm.  When sound waves hit the diaphragm, both plates convert the sound waves into electrical signals.

Due to their high sensitivity, these microphones are susceptible to background noise interference, which can significantly affect recording quality.  However, their recording quality is generally excellent.

3.Ribbon Microphone :

Ribbon microphones, renowned for their exceptional quality, find their application in piano, horn and guitar performance.  They are equipped with a thin aluminum ribbon that generates a magnetic field.

As sound waves hit this delicate ribbon, it causes vibrations due to its thin profile.  As a result, sound is captured and resonates faster due to its thin structure.

Unlike in the past, modern microphones no longer rely on a transformer to step up the output voltage.  Instead, they use a magnetic pole configuration for better performance.

inventor of the microphone :

In 1876, Emile Berliner, along with Thomas Edison, invented the microphone.

Advantages of microphone :

  • The advantages of microphones, many of which are mentioned below:-
  • Real-time modification of sound waves is possible, instantly enhancing audio quality.
  • Microphones prove to be a budget-friendly option.
  • Most microphones are equipped to handle high sound pressure levels effectively.
  • Many microphones operate without the need for an external power supply.

Disadvantages of microphone :

  • Some disadvantages of microphone:-
  • Storing sound files requires more memory allocation.
  • The audio quality of a microphone may not always reach exceptional levels.
  • Some microphones, being highly sensitive, may also pick up background noise during recording.
